How Does It Work?
Working with an architectural lighting designer is similar to working with an architect; the design process follows the same phases of the architectural design process:
- Schematic Design: Collaborative consultation with owners, architect, interior designer, and builder to discuss goals, creative vision, needs, budget, timeline, and architectural features and materials. At this meeting, I will present working samples of my preferred fixtures, discuss controls, color temperature, and art lighting. A preliminary Lighting Plan and Light Fixture Schedule will be created in response to feedback from this initial meeting.
- Design Development: Collaborating as in Phase 1, we will review the preli
minary Lighting Plan to refine it and discuss any changes that may be desired. At this point, I will have an estimate of the cost of your lighting as specified, should Value Engineering be a consideration. - Construction Documents: After completing all revisions, I will provide the builder and/or architect with a final Lighting Plan and Spec Book, which will include detailed Notes to Electrician, Light Fixture Schedule, Cut Sheets, and Installation Instructions, and a simplified Light Fixture Schedule for Bid.
- Bidding: I work directly with manufacturing reps and electrical supply houses to ensure my clients pay the lowest price possible for specified fixtures. (No mark-up is included in my service.) I will review all bids for errors and can facilitate purchase through the most appropriate vendor.
- Construction Administration: Avoiding problems is one of the most important services I provide as a lighting designer. Throughout the construction phase, I will coordinate with your architect, interior designer, cabinetmaker, AV integrator, smart house control system, landscape architect, electrical contractor and builder as needed to ensure a trouble-free implementation of the lighting plan as designed and specified.
- Punch List and Aiming: Once your lighting is installed and powered, I will coordinate with the electrician and builder for a walkthrough, at which time I will aim your art lights and note any issues that need to be addressed.
We can tailor this process to suit your needs and budget. Smaller projects may only need specifications and help with purchasing, more complex projects generally prefer to include construction administration through to the punch list for truly trouble-free implementation of your custom lighting plan.
