Trained as an architect, Maria discovered a passion for architectural lighting design, which she says is “like sculpting with light– the best job in architecture!”
Maria returned to college late in life after raising two beautiful children to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an architect. Graduating summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture in 2006, Maria continued to grad school at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning and achieved a Town Planning Certificate in addition to a Master of Architecture degree.
In an ironic twist of timing, Maria graduated at the height of the economic crisis that hit in December of 2008, which derailed her intended career path as an architect specializing in sustainable mixed-use development. This turned out for the best, however, when Maria was hired as an architectural lighting design intern, where she first discovered she was fascinated by lighting design. She worked on a variety of projects, from high-end residential to the Circuit of the Americas facility in Austin, home to Formula 1 races and the 360 Amphitheater.
Maria started her own lighting design firm– ATX Design Studio– in 2013 and has been happily “saving the world from bad lighting” ever since. She has designed and specified architectural lighting for well over 100 projects both large and small, both new construction and remodel. Highly detail-oriented and skilled in both the art and science of architectural lighting design, Maria will design a custom lighting plan for your project that is responsive to the owners’ lifestyle, goals, and budget and the creative vision of the design team, and follow through with project management to the punch list to insure successful design implementation.
